Torture, Fear and Public Opinion on Fox's "24"

The hit T.V. show "24", illustrates, desensitizes and justify's torture?

"24" Torture Video's

I have been a huge fan of "24" for 7 years now, and I have always found it to be extremely entertaining and captivating. With each season and each episode comes sub-plots are intriguing, but I can't help myself, but to glue my eyes to the screen when Kiefer Sutherland's character, Jack Baurer is either called in or takes matter's into his own hands and interrogates or tortures the antigonist of the season.

He is the only protagonist, that is capable of setting aside societies norms of morals and ethics, and does what is necessary in order to protect the United States, even if it means breaking multiple laws and protocols.
My question to you is, should Torture be depicted in television?

Blackberry's Disconnecting Society?

BEFORE I GOT A BLACKBERRY...... sure i felt left out, because it seemed that all the popular people had one. People that serve an important role in society, whether it be the President of the United States, Barack Obama you can tell the type of person that has a Blackberry.

Now with the new site Twitter, people have the capability to Tweet on their Blackberry's and are able to communicate what is going on within society.

I would get irritated when talking to people that constantly held their blackberry's in their hands text messaging, bbming, checking their facebook and e-mails. Some would call it multi-tasking, however, other's would call it straight up rude.

This is what the media thinks of Blackberry's, Twittering, and Tweeting...

Media Consolidation

THE ISSUE OF MEDIA CONSOLIDATION
After watching a youtube video on media consolidation....
I came to my own observations:
The general public wants to stop media consolidation, which is when one company can own a number of different forms of media. For example, newspapers and television networks can be owned by one company.
The need to stop Oligopoly in the media is becoming a strong concern amongst the majority of the public. This video makes it clear that a conglomerate of the medica can be damaging to the public. As far as I am concerned, the media and democracy go hand-in-hand in order to gain information.
However, with media consolidation, there will be fewer sources for objective information.

Crisis In Journalism

The need for journalists to be independent from their owners' is needed more than ever in these modern times. The reason for this is because we need more objectivity to the things that are going on in society and the world. Real news shouldn't be directed by the publisher's need to please advertisers and other commercial pressures.

In my opinion, the reason the news is saturated with the same stories, but spun differently is the result of the companies that own syndicated, newspapers, radio stations, and television station are consolidated and are out to make money. They are not interested in showing a democratic society all the facts.

The Politics Of Reality T.V.

I have always known that television has had a major impact on our society, especially reality T.V. shows. However, I often felt that T.V. icons would exploit bad situation in order to improve their image and fame. The article on, T.V. Interventions: Personal Responsibility and Techniques of the Self, has completely changed my view point on some of these programs on television.

According to the article, the popularity of reality TV began to increase in the late 1990’s, since then celebrities, such as, Dr. Phil have established foundations and programs that are better equipped, willing , and capable of providing better support for people in need than our government. For instance, after Hurricane Katrina, the people in the communities were devastated, angry and fearful. Because organizations, such as, FEMA, were not proactive enough for displaced citizens, Dr. Phil used his influences to encourage volunteerism and raising relief funds through his nonprofit Dr. Phil Foundation. This foundation gave the victims of Hurricane Katrina a chance to work through the psychological trauma of such a tragic event. Dr. Phil has offered to have victims of Hurricane Katrina appear on his TV show.

Since these events, Dr. Phil and other influential people have started Life Intervention Programs. According to the article the term “ Life Intervention, is a way to mobilize professional motivators and lifestyle experts, from financial advisors to life couches, to help people overcome hurdles in their personal, professional, and domestic lives. This Life Intervention movement has become a national phenomena and has spawned an array of TV programs that are focused on resolving specific problems. For Example, (Supernanny) has helped parents raise their children and addiction (Intervention). These types of shows have integrated neoliberal logic in order to help regulate and improve individuals lives.

Most of these Reality TV shows could be considered a form of media consolidation, since most of the Celebrities that have TV programs have teamed up with numerous media companies to produce interactive websites, tie-in merchandise, books, DVDs and workbook exercises. All of these aspects can be tied in to the public sphere and the need to help people in our society that need help, as well as to motivate the general public to feel compassion for those who are suffering.
